Whether you think of the deep ocean as “like, fish and stuff” or “eyeless, creeping monsters”, it’s actually worse than you know. Since the sun doesn’t reach the ocean floor, there’s very little plant life, and all the critters down there have to get their food from someplace– namely, the waters above.
Anything that drops down to the ocean floor is nutrients for something else, which leads to what scientists call “marine snow.” While that sounds nice and pleasant, it’s actually pretty awful. Marine snow is primarily made up of two things: Poop and the corpses of other fish.
So instead of soft white flakes of frozen water like we get up here, their snow is more like a constant confetti of shit and dead things.
And just like that, I will never, ever go scuba diving.
